Affenpinscher's distinct scruffy appearance and intelligent personalities make them lovely pets. These puppies will not outgrow their playful and mischievous nature, but will always be willing to protect their owner and family. This friendly little dog enjoys being with its family, and loves to 'monkey' around. Because Affenpinschers are highly energetic, proper training is recommended. Your puppy will need consistent, firm training. Be sure to put some variety in your Affenpinscher's training so your puppy does not become bored. They are known to learn commands very quickly, though some may be difficult to housebreak. A fearless defender, the Affenpinscher will quickly become a leader unless you set clear rules and boundaries early on. An Affenpinscher should get along with other dogs and pets, especially when they are raised with them. They are not recommended for very young children unless the children know how to be a leader of the dog. Interestingly, although they have a distinct appearance that some associate with terriers, they are not directly part of the terrier group, but are part of the pinscher-schnauzer group.

Unlike the Siberian Husky whom they resemble, the Alaskan Klee Kai is standoffish and suspicious of strangers. Because of this they do make extremely good watchdogs.
